Save Our Schools DC
Save our Schools - SE/NE (SOS)
is a grassroots non-profit organization of District of Columbia Public
Schools (DCPS) parents, students, teachers, school workers, and public
school supporters working to achieve equity in the funding of
neighborhood public schools. We believe that public education, best
embodied in the quality neighborhood school down the street, is a
cornerstone of a democratic and just society. The District of
Columbia’s unique political status, allowed Congress to force first
charter schools (in 1996) and then vouchers (in 2004) on an unwilling
citizenry. These efforts toward privatization masquerading as
reform have drained not just funding, but also political will and
action, rendering public school advocates frustrated and
voiceless. Our primary mission is to re-energize public school
advocacy at the grassroots and institutional levels through coalition
building with like-minded groups at the local and national levels, and
through public information campaigns, political activism and, when
necessary, legal action.
Save Our Schools Coalition
The Save Our Schools Coalition is a Washington DC
based all-volunteer
group of teachers, parents, students and community activists, and is a
collaborative effort among members of Save Our Schools, the Full
Funding Coalition, and the Mobilization for Global Justice. The
Coalition was formed to hold public teach-ins and protests to increase
public awareness about the ways that charter schools are hurting
traditional public schools here in Washington DC and throughout the U.S.
